Would you like to contribute to Wort journal?
We welcome submissions from people striving to care for, connect with, or work together with herbs, weeds and wild plants in ways that honour their being.
All forms of written content considered related to contemporary folk herbalism (of all cultural lineages and traditions) and adjacent practices. If your contribution centres visual artwork we ask for a written piece to accompany it.
You don’t need to be a qualified herbalist, though qualified practitioners are very welcome too; we recognise the rich tradition of folk herbalism and its wisdoms. We won’t publish therapeutically advisory content from lay practitioners unless approved/clearly referenced. You don’t need to ‘be a writer’ either; we can help develop ideas and offer editorial support where necessary. We can offer a small token fee.
We particularly welcome submissions from those inhabiting marginalised identities or with the perspective of marginalised experiences. We are also eager to highlight projects and organisations working with herbs on the ground or within their communities in ways that challenge harmful paradigms or create and nurture alternatives. Projects requiring fundraising welcome. We will prioritise contributions from those with a connection to Britain as a geographical area.
Our politics are unequivocally anti-racist, decolonial and anti-acolonial, anti-ableist, trans positive, anti-heteronormative, anti-classist, sex and sex worker positive, asexuality positive, body positive, feminist and anti-patriarchal. We are ideologically anticapitalist although we are entrapped within the mechanisms of it to survive. All contributions should be in accordance with these fundamental principles. We are in the process of developing some contributor guidelines around language and encourage a conscientious referencing of sources as a practice of ethical integrity.
Please get in touch with a brief outline proposal (your idea, the type of piece it will be, the perspectives you will bring) and a little about yourself/any links before Dec 21st. The deadline for first-draft submissions will be the end of January.
